Gustave Jacques Hamelin (1809-1895). He started the Art school in 1831 and was the pupil of Ingres. He exhibited at the Salon from 1852 to 1874. E.B./G. The Eugène Boudin Museum Honfleur keeps : Pêcheurs débarquant le poisson / fishermen loading off fish, 1857 (Ill) among 19 preserved works.
Henri Joseph Harpignies (1819-1916) Painter of landscapes and painter in watercolours. Studied under Jean Achard (1807-1884). Anatole France named him the Michel-Angel of the trees. Fernand Herbo (1905-1995). " Herbo deserves unquestionably to be remembered as one of these Maîtres of the twentieth century .../.. in 1950 by the Salon des Indépendants, to which he always remained faithful, he presented a port, which was very noticed... Painter of Montmartre, he set up in Honfleur where his wife recently was still managing a bar, also a tobacconist's and fishing articles shop : le Bar des Artistes today named le Bistrot des Artistes!.. The ceiling decorated by Fernand Herbo is still worth the trip. (14 Place Pierre Berthelot). Johan or Jean-Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) Dutch realist painter. Studied under Andreas Schelfhout.(1787-1870). He visits Normandy before 1855 with Eugène Isabey. In 1860 Camille Corot helps him to settle down in Paris. From 1862 till 1865 during his stays in Honfleur, at the Saint-Siméon farmhouse, J.B. Jongkind meets Claude Monet who becomes his pupil, Eugène Boudin and Charles Baudelaire... The E. Boudin Museum preserves six works of the artist. « What strikes me is the influence of this Jongkind. Celso Lagar (1891 Cindad-Rodrigo / Salamanque-1966 Seville) Spanish School. Painter, Lithographer and sculptor. At first pupil of his father woodcarver, since the youngest age, he enters the Art college of Madrid in the studio of the sculptor Blay. In Paris in 1911, then he began to paint. Established in France, this artist also exhibits in Spain. One owes him also sights of ports and navies, but he attempted especially to describe the life coloured with the fairground entertainers .../. Max Jacob introduced some of his exhibitions, Modigliani made his portrait. E.B./G He is one of the founders of the " Salon of Surindépendants ". He stops painting in 1955. The Eugène Boudin Museum preserves: Honfleur, le quai de l'Hôtel de Ville (ill.) and les roulottes devant la chapelle de l'hôpital. Charles Lapostolet 1824-1890. Marine Painter and landscape painter. Pupil of Cogniet, at the same time as Dubourg, he meets Boudin in Honfleur and forms a friendship with him. He studies with rightness the atmosphere saturated by humidity and the brilliant effects with a nervous, suggestive or more descriptive touch according to the subjects. Eugène Ernest Edmond Le Marcis, comte (1829-1900). Painter, born in le Havre, on April 4th, 1829, died in Paris on 1900, January 4th. Inspired by the great poem of Dante, he decided to devote his life to fix it on the canvas. He learned the rudimentary painting in the studio of Ary Scheffer and in Italy where he reproduced Michel-Angel .../. EB/G. Stanislas Victor Edouard Lépine (1835-1892). Pupil of Corot, specialized in the reproduction of the Seine’s banks, of which he returned all the animated life and all the poetry ./... Lépine was one of the Maîtres of the landscape on XIX th century who prepared the way to the impressionists and who began to educate the public in a more synthetic vision of the nature. The impressionists did not ignore his merits and invited him to exhibited during their exhibition of 1874. Raymond Cogniat: Diction of the Modern Painting (Hazan 54) Xavier Auguste Leprince (1799-1826). Landscape and genre painter son of the painter Anne Pierre Le Prince and brother of Robert Léopold (1800-1847) & Gustave (1810-1837). The E. Boudin museum preserves a painting attributed to Xavier Leprince: expressing the spirit of adventure of the painters travelling all over the country. In this work, painters and geographers sketch nature, as Baugean has done it from 1817 till 1819. A sight of Honfleur painted by Baugean shows this time. A-M. Being painted to Honfleur in 1911 and 1920. In the collections of the Eugene Boudin Museum, Manguin signs an Indian ink representing Toulon in 1927. Albert or Pierre-Albert Marquet (1875-1947) Stays and paints in 1907 and 1934 in le Havre. In 1911 in Honfleur. In 1912 and 1927 in Rouen. In 1930 to Boulogne sur mer > le Havre Bastille day Georges Braque, Othon Friesz and Raoul Dufy create in 1905 with Albert Marquet the circle of the Modern Art intended to promote the art, the music and the poetry. F. Martin, also by the name of le père Martin, was the trader and the support of the painters of Barbizon and Saint-Siméon who he brought together in his shop. He was ahead of Paul Durand-Ruel in the gallery of which he organized in 1874, as a temporary manager of the cooperative, the first impressionistic exhibition. Georges Michel (1763-1843) Landscape painter. He asked the open air for his only motives for inspiration. Claude Oscar Monet (1840-1926). Painter of landscapes, figures and compositions, born in Paris, died in Giverny. He is raised in Havre. In 1858, as a young caricaturist, he meets Eugène Boudin. Boudin reveals painting to Claude Monet and he advises him to paint according to nature : Let paint landscape, sea and skies are so beautiful, animals, people and trees such as the nature did them with their character, their true way in the light, in the air, such as they are. Monet writes : I had seen some of his painting and I prefer to say to you that I found it hideous .../. I agreed to go to work outdoors with him .../. There we left for Rouelles, without much conviction for my part. Boudin set up his easel and started to work. I looked at him more attentively and then it was as a veil that tears: I had understood, I had seized what painting could be .../. if I became a painter .../. I owe it to. G. Jean-Aubry. Jongkind continues the education of the future master in Normandy. Jongkind was shown my sketches, he invited me to come to work with him, explained to me the whys and wherefores of his way and so completing the education which I had already received from Boudin, from this moment he became my true Master. Eugène Boudin advises him to go studying in Paris and recommends him to some of his friends: Constant Troyon and Charles Monginot (1825-1900). Paris will be for Monet neither the Art college not the studios but free work at the Suisse Academy (by the name of the founder: M. Émile Renouf (1845-1894) Painter of marine & genre. Studied under Boulanger, Lefebvre and Charles Duran (Carolus-Duran). Golden medal in the World Fair of 1889. The E. Boudin Museum preserves ten works of the artist. Théodule Augustin Ribot (1823-1891) Painter of history, genre portrait, of still lives and etcher. As a friend of Boudin, he was one of the founders of the show of the Champ de Mars; having appeared among the denied painters (Salon des refusés) of 1859 with A. Legros , Fantin-Latour , Whistler ... all gathered in a common admiration for Courbet and a will of realism, not taking however the way of the open air. > Joconde database. The E. Boudin Museum preserves a work of the artist. Jules Charles Rozier (1821-1882) Painter of Landscapes and etcher. Pupil of Bertin and Delaroche. To the Salon from 1839 till 1882 he exhibited some sights of the edges of the Seine and seascapes, in the tone silver grey. Henri de Saint-Delis Salon : The official exhibition of the painters, members or approved by the Academy, since 1667 under the administration of Louis XV, presented to the Royal Palace, then in the Large Gallery of the Louvre, takes its name in the Square Lounge (le Salon carré) of the Louvre Palace in 1725. It becomes free in 1791, before being supervised in 1798, by a board for admittance stemming from the Institute, and, in 1881, by that of the Society of the French Artists. It is presented to le Palais de l'Industrie / the Palace of the Industry created on the occasion of the World Fair of 1855, and replaced after its destruction by the Grand Palais from 1900. The inflexible academicism of the jury provokes the creation of other exhibitions, in the 18th century Exposition de la Jeunesse / Exhibition of the Youth - Salon de l'Académie de Saint-Luc / Show of Saint Luc's academy - Salon de la Correspondance / Show of the Correspondence. But shows especially appear, being organized in reaction to the Salon officiel de Paris / official Show : the Salon des Refusés / Show of the Rejected/Refused, in 1863 authorized by Napoleon the third at the same time as the official Show in another section of the Palace of the Industry. Next exhibition in 1873 - Salon des Impressionnistes / Show of the Impressionists from 1874 till 1886. - The exhibitions of the big dealers of art are also making the history : Nadar, Goupil, Durand-Ruel, Vollard - Salon des Indépendants / Show of the Independents since 1884 and still a topical event. The official shows are always an absolutely compulsory route for the French artists. Catalogs accompany these shows, the first booklet dates 1673. In the press, comments and criticisms are signed in 18th and 19th century: Diderot, Baudelaire Aesthetic Curiosities , Goncourt brothers, René Joseph Ménard Gustave Planche and Zola's Journal ... Seurat Jean Souverbie (1891-1981). Painter of compositions, nude and still lives. Studied under J-P. Laurens and Maurice Denis. Being interested in the aesthetics of Nabis; his art ensues from the French Cubism of which he has especially learned the return to the rule and the well-balanced composition. He paints numerous works for passenger ships, between 1945 and 1951 and stays, the summer, in Honfleur at the Cheval Blanc Inn. The Eugène Boudin Museum keeps two of the works of the artist. Constant Troyon (1810 1865). Painter of landscapes and animals. He worked with his father, his godfather and the painter Emile Van Marcke De Lummen or van Marek (1827-1890) on the Manufacture de Sèvres. Frankness of the values and the always observed degradation of the effects of the light are qualities shown in the painter works .../. E.B./G.
