BOUDIN NUAGES BLANCSCharles Baudelaire (1821-1867) In January (1859) Baudelaire visits his mother in Honfleur and then makes up with her. He writes several poems during his stay. In February (1859) Baudelaire sends Le Voyage (last journey), to Maxime Du Camp (1822-1894), which he has written in Honfleur. Report of the Painting Show of 1859 by Charles Baudelaire about Eugène Boudin's works: .../. These studies, so quickly and so faithfully sketched from what is the most fickle and the most imperceptible in its force and its colour, from the waves and the clouds, have always written in their margin the date, the hour and the wind: for example, October 8th , noon, wind of Northwest. If you sometimes have the time to experience these meteorological beauties, you would verify by memory the exactness of Mr Boudin's observations. The key hidden with the hand, you would guess the season, the hour and the wind. I exaggerate nothing. I saw. At the end, all these clouds in the fantastic and brilliant forms, these chaotic darkness, these suspended and added the one to the others green and pink immensities, these gaping volcanoes, these firmaments of black or purple and crumpled, rolled or torn satin, these horizons in mourning or flowing of melted metal, all these depths, all this magnificence went up to my brain as a heady drink or as the eloquence of opium ./... George Braque (1882-1963). " He entered the Art College of le Havre, where he became the friend of his ancestors Dufy and Friesz, in Charles-Marie Lhullier's studio, old Norman painter, who had known Jongkind and Boudin.../. Having painted in an impressionist way, as his friend Friesz, this one reunited him in the aesthetics Fauvist which he elaborated since 1905 with Matisse, Vlaminck and Derain... " Jacques Busse E.B./G.

Cadart : In the years 1860, Cadart succeeded F. Martin. He especially buys watercolours, but also exhibition paintings. In 1866, he leaves for the United States, in order to sell works.

Adolphe-Félix Cals (Paris 1810 - Honfleur 1880). Studied under J L Anselin and L Cogniet. From 1871 Cals shared his life between Paris and Honfleur. The friendship with Jongkind when he settles down in Honfleur (1873), and his relations with the painters of the artistic circle of Saint-Simeon, place him among the precursors of the impressionism with works as "Soleil couchant à Honfleur" in 1873 or "Déjeuner à Honfleur" in 1875 / le déjeuner à Honfleur. (Orsay Museum).../. he took part in the exhibitions of the Impressionists, from the first in 1874 .../. E.B./G. The E. Boudin Museum preserves five portraits painted by Cals: Mr and Mrs Martin, Firmin Martin the painting dealer of the pre-impressionist and Barbizon's painters. Cals who has a keen understanding of the portraits, let show through the soul of the model : sweetness and kindness of Claudine, anxiety and pain of his daughter .../. A-M. Bergeret-Gourbin.

That for more than twenty five years the best critics proclaim that Adolphe Félix Cals is the real inventor of the impressionism changes nothing to his deficit of fame. The term has little sense in the art history, however Cals very empirically finalized this short, regular and especially transparent touch which reproduces the vibrations of the grey - blue light and gives this feeling of space and freedom .../. Cals is the oldest of the generation which he is associated with. He is born in 1810. This is why, in his solitary, modest and creative collection of the meditative impressions, so close to Monet of the 80s among Etretat and Giverny, he establishes the undervalued link between Corot and the full brilliant impressionism .../. As Courbet, Huet, Corot and Monet, Cals definitely belongs to this trend of the painting which tries to transcribe this physics of elements, so obvious in Normandy, as essential as the capture of the light.../. Cals writes a lot and his letters say to us to what point, by painting, he is an actor of life « I create a work of consciousness, and this work, which makes me happy, hurts nobody and always has a small relative value. There is no art where there is no heart. Nature is an inexhaustible collection, which the artist should unceasingly search in, to find there the means to express the feeling which torments him and which is a witness of his own nature, which inclines him to everything with love. Oh! What a life, in spite of all these setbacks! I only wish to paint » letter to Arsène Alexandre .../. Alain Tapié.

Eugène Louis Charpentier (1811-1890) Painter of history and genre. Pupil of Gérard and Léon Cogniet.

Gustave Henri Colin (1828-1910 or 1911or 1919) Painter. Landscape painter. Pupil of Dutillieux and Thomas Couture. he began in the show of1857. He participated in the Salon des Refusés in 1863. Then he exposed regularly to the Salon of Paris until the foundation of la Nationale. He was from the beginning a member of the Nouveau Groupement Artistique

Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875). Corot tells that one of the watercolours of Bonington, briefly seen in a shop, fascinated it and rather than a commission agent he was, made a painter of him. Pupil of the neo-classic landscape painters Michallon then Bertin. He will paint all his life the landscape according to nature. The example of the Dutch masters of the 17th century and the painters of English open air, teaches him to capture the atmospheric variations. .../. Arrived at his mature expression Daubigny will say to him: " Don't complain: you put nothing on your canvas and there is everything! " ./... If he admired Courbet without reserve, he badly understood J-F. Millet, saying " that his lunch bag agreed badly with this classical music " ./... one can regret that the painter who had produced the admirable study of Narni's bridge, in which all the modern technique seems summarized, understood nothing to artists such as Manet and Monet. But focus only on the painter. Théodore Rousseau said that only " the sons of the light " are worthy of the name of artists: In that case nobody deserved it more than Corot .../. Maurice François Auguste Courant (1847-1925) Painter of marine and landscape. Pupil of Meissonier. he began in the show in 1870. Museum of Rouen.

Gustave Courbet (1819-1877). Landscape painter. Painter of portraits and genre. Pupil of Flajoulot in Besançon, de Steuben and Hesse in Paris. The Courbet's first paintings are inspired by the most literary romanticism: an Odalisque according to Victor Hugo, Leila inspired by Georges Sand. From the Saint-Siméon farmhouse at Honfleur and its neighbourhood, Courbet paints his seascapes in 1841, 1859 and 1865. With Eugène Boudin they form a sturdy friendship. The assurance and the haughtiness of Courbet stimulate Eugène Boudin. Eugène Boudin will remain faithful to Courbet imprisoned after the events of the Commune, considered as responsible of the destruction of the (Paris) Vendôme Column, while his remaining friends are numbered. In Saint-Pelagie jail Courbet will paint from memory: marine, gros temps, 1871. The E. Boudin Museum preserves: Soleil couchant sur l'estuaire, 1859. > notices & images Joconde among which; Honfleur l'embouchure de la Seine / Honfleur, the mouth of the river Seine Museum of the city of Lille & La mer orageuse, dit aussi La vague/ the wave.

Charles François Daubigny (1817 1878). Painter, landscape painter and engraver. He belonged to a painter family ; he studied first of all with his father Edmé François Daubigny. At the death of his mother (the painter and the miniaturist Amélie Daubigny, been born Dautel), in the age of 17 years, he left to Italy and dedicated one year to the visit of the main museums. On returning to Paris he was trained on the restoration at the museum of le Louvre until 1838; then he earned his keep with illustrations and drawings for engraving (wood cut). He made his name as an engraver and exposed etchings to Salon of 1841 and 1845. The painter's reputation began to assert itself from 1844. He made built a barge named: Botin*- the studio boat - where he lived and worked investigating the Seine. The paintings which followed each other achieved a great success. The criticism perfectly knew how to disentangle what should be for Daubigny's credit : its technical qualities, its sincerity, its truth, the coolness and the liveliness of its tones, the flow of the atmosphere, the simplicity of the motives ./... the new greenery, the transparency of the water. All this is of Daubigny ./... At least he stands by painting what he sees and especially what he feels, what tends to do of him more still than an initiator, an impressionist literally .../. There is some Robinson recollection on Sundays, with young ladies in fresh hat, boats on the Seine, parasols covering clear napes. The ideal of the "shop girl" nevertheless heightens in the dignity of an artist who is a Maître .../. Emmanuel-Charles Benezit. E.B./G. The E. Boudin Museum preserves one work of C-F Daubigny and one work of his son Karl. > musée d'Orsay Le pré des Graves, à Villerville > musée du Louvre Les Graves de Villerville. * Le Botin. Narcisse Virgile Diaz De La Peña. (1807-1876) Landscape and genre painter. You never knew anything, said to him Tomas Couture, you know only one road of the nature: the forest of Fontainebleau (Barbizon) E.B./G. > musée du Louvre

Dufy some drawings and three paintings: a self-portrait painted before the fauve period, two landscapes: wheat field in Normandy Saint - Adresse. One watercolour Honfleur, open air market, place Saint - Catherine, 1901.     Jean Dufy (1888-1964) le Havre. He entered the Art College of Havre, where had been pupils his brother Raoul, Friesz and Braque, but he left it early to join his brother in Paris, who was his real master... It is inevitable to compare both brothers: Raoul Dufy often attempts to dissect each of the elements which enter one of its compositions, often funnily or tenderness, at least with acuteness; Jean Dufy is more sensitive to the global panorama of the represented scene... E.B./G
